November passenger car sales down 8 percent


New Delhi, Dec 10 (IANS): Sales of domestic passenger car segment fell 8.16 percent in November, indicating a bearish consumer sentiment due to slow economic growth, high fuel and interest costs.

Data furnished Monday by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed that 142,849 units were sold in the month under review as against an off-take of 155,535 units in the corresponding period of 2012.

Utility vehicles sales fell by 9.14 percent at 44,243 units from 48,692 units sold in the corresponding period of 2012.

Domestic sales of vans fell by 28.37 percent at 14,428 units from 20,142 units off-take in November, last year.

Total passenger vehicle sales which includes, cars, utility vehicles and vans in the month under review went down by 10.18 percent at 201,520 units from an off-take of 224,369 units in November 2012.

For last month, SIAM reported a decline of 33.93 percent in sales of heavy, medium and light commercial vehicles which are a key indicator of economic activity. Sales stood at 11,523 units from 17,441 units in the corresponding month of last year.

Three-wheeler sales slumped by by 21.68 units at 40,456 from 51,656 units sold in November 2012.

However, total two-wheeler sales in the month under review grew by 5.55 units at 1,240,732 units from 1,175,441 units sold in the corresponding period of 2012. Total motorcycle sales increased by 1.44 percent at 880,015 units from an off-take of 867,508 units in November, last year.

However, scooter segment sales in the month under review grew by 25.03 percent at 303,586 units from 244,414 units sold in the corresponding period of last year.

Total exports for the month went up by 6.16 percent at 253,376 units from 238,682 units being shipped out.

Total domestic sales in November 2013 gained by 0.90 percent at 1,526,438 units from 1,512,869 units sold in the corresponding month of last year.
