New Delhi, Oct 9: Air travel is set to become more expensive as Air India, Air India Express and Akasa Air have announced increases in fuel surcharges on domestic and international flights from October 9, citing rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices and volatility in global energy markets.
Air India and Air India Express have revised their domestic fuel surcharges to between Rs 400 and Rs 1,200, depending on the distance travelled. For international flights, the surcharge will range from USD 55 to USD 215, depending on the destination.

Air India said continued volatility in aviation fuel prices, driven partly by geopolitical developments and pressure on global energy markets, had increased airline operating costs. Fuel accounts for a substantial share of an airline’s expenditure, prompting carriers to revise surcharges to partly offset the additional burden.
Akasa Air has also reintroduced fuel surcharges on domestic flights and increased charges on international services. Under its revised structure, domestic passengers will pay between Rs 375 and Rs 1,150, depending on the distance, while the surcharge for international flights will be Rs 2,500.
The airline said rising ATF prices had placed sustained pressure on operating costs and that the revised charges were intended to partially offset the impact.
Aviation turbine fuel accounts for around 40 per cent of airline operating costs, making fluctuations in fuel prices a major concern for carriers. Other airlines, including IndiGo, have also revised fuel surcharges amid rising expenses.
The increase means passengers booking flights from October 9 may have to pay more even if the base airfare remains unchanged. Domestic passengers travelling longer distances are likely to face higher charges under the distance-based slabs, while international surcharges will depend on the destination.
Passengers are advised to check the final fare breakdown before booking, as the total ticket price includes fuel surcharges and other applicable charges. Comparing the final payable amount across airlines will help travellers assess the overall cost of their journey.
