New Delhi, Oct 8: Delhi Police has registered an FIR against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for allegedly assaulting police personnel and obstructing government work during Wednesday’s protest in the national capital, police sources said on Thursday.

The FIR also names several other Congress leaders and party workers who participated in the demonstration. Police said they are examining the incidents reported during the protest and the alleged roles of those involved.

According to police, 91 people were detained during the protest, including several MPs and Opposition leaders.

Rahul Gandhi had led INDIA bloc leaders in another round of protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition MPs travelled in a procession of buses from a lunch meeting before reaching near Jantar Mantar, where they staged a sit-in.

For the second consecutive day, police stopped the planned protest midway and detained Rahul Gandhi and several other leaders.

Rahul Gandhi said the protests would continue until Gyanesh Kumar resigned, describing the campaign as a fight to protect the country's electoral system.

The nearly three-hour bus procession and subsequent sit-in near the Shangri-La hotel witnessed clashes between protesters and security personnel as police attempted to clear the area. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other women leaders also staged a protest on the road while holding copies of the Constitution.

Rahul Gandhi repeatedly resisted attempts by police to take him into a detention vehicle, while other INDIA bloc leaders were also involved in exchanges with security personnel.

The protest came a day after INDIA bloc MPs marched from Parliament and Rahul Gandhi staged a sit-in at Akashvani Bhawan. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had hosted a lunch for alliance MPs at a restaurant on Janpath before Wednesday’s demonstration.
