New Delhi, Sep 27: Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday shared a cryptic message on social media, saying difficult conditions had taught him to remain calm.
“I love swimming in the sea when it's rough. It teaches you that rough is just another kind of calm,” Gandhi posted on X without specifying the context of his message.
The post came amid the ongoing political controversy over the Election Commission of India and the nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Reports of differences within the three-member poll panel over certain decisions have also added to the dispute.
Gandhi has in recent days intensified his allegations against the Election Commission, accusing it of electoral wrongdoing and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
“For three years, I have been exposing vote theft. Now, the Election Commissioners themselves are acknowledging it and bringing the truth to light. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar has committed treason. He should resign immediately and become an approver,” Gandhi had said.
He also said a full investigation would be conducted into what he described as a conspiracy involving “vote theft”.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday also accused the BJP leadership of “shielding” Gyanesh Kumar and demanded his resignation. She said serious acts against democracy could not take place without the support of the leadership.
Priyanka Gandhi said the INDIA bloc parties were united in their demands over the Election Commission issue. She also called for the removal of legal safeguards available to Election Commissioners.
Her remarks came amid reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on multiple occasions over decisions and instructions related to electoral-roll revision, deletion and addition of names, changes to forms for new voters and access to voter data.
Priyanka Gandhi also alleged that the BJP was protecting the Chief Election Commissioner and said that if serious crimes against democracy were being committed, it would be difficult for them to take place without the support of the political leadership.
“He (CEC Gyanesh Kumar) needs to be tried for treason,” she said.
The INDIA bloc parties are likely to meet on September 30 to discuss the Election Commission controversy and other issues.
The Election Commission, meanwhile, has maintained that its decisions, including those relating to the SIR exercise, were taken unanimously.
