Phagwara, Sep 27: Students of Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara staged a major protest in the early hours of Sunday following unverified reports circulating on social media about the alleged rape of a female student on the campus.

Several visuals circulating on social media showed agitated students damaging window panes and flower pots, while some objects were also set on fire. The protesting students also blocked the Jalandhar-Phagwara National Highway, disrupting traffic.

The protest was reportedly triggered by rumours about the alleged rape of a female student. However, police said they had no information confirming such an incident on the campus.

Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora said police received information about the situation at the LPU campus at around 1:45 am.

“When we reached here, we came to know that there were rumours. Because of the rumours, students gathered here,” the SSP told media.

He said police spoke to students who had raised issues concerning the university administration and that their grievances were being examined.

“We heard them and are trying to get them resolved. The situation is completely under control,” Toora said.

The incident comes a day after students of Chitkara University in Patiala district staged a protest following unverified claims circulating about the alleged suicide of two female students on the campus. A police vehicle was also reportedly damaged during that protest.

The Chitkara University administration, located near Rajpura in Patiala, denied that any suicide had taken place on the campus and urged students not to believe or spread rumours.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation at LPU, while no official confirmation has emerged regarding the alleged incident that triggered Sunday's protest.
