Austin, Sep 19: The Mangalurean Konkani Catholic community in Central Texas celebrated its first-ever Monthi Fest Konkani Mass and community gathering in Austin, marking a significant milestone for Moriachem Kutam of Central Texas (MKCT), formed in 2026.
What began as a dream in 2025 has now taken root in Central Texas, with families from across the region and beyond gathering to celebrate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, affectionately known as Mamma Mary. The celebration brought together the community to give thanks to god and preserve the faith, culture and traditions passed down through generations.
With around 80 families, MKCT brings together Mangalurean Konkani Catholics in Austin and surrounding areas, fostering a welcoming community while keeping their faith and heritage alive.
The celebration was held at St Thomas More Catholic Church in Austin. Fr Melwyn D’Souza, originally from Bantwal and who travelled from Orlando, was the main celebrant, along with Fr Manickam Rajmanickam.
The Konkani prayers and hymns evoked memories of Monthi Fest celebrations in Mangaluru and across the South and North Canara regions. A special highlight was the offertory procession, during which families and children brought flowers and the first fruits of the harvest to Mother Mary, symbolising gratitude for god’s blessings and the passing on of faith and tradition to the next generation.
After Mass, the priests led the community in procession to the hall, where the Novem was blessed. Children then took part in the cherished tradition of showering flowers on Mamma Mary.
The festivities continued with a traditional Novem Jevon featuring seven Mangalurean vegetarian dishes, along with a special serving of bafat pork and sannas. Konkani music, performances and fellowship brought together people of all ages.
Young children delighted the gathering with a welcome song, while teens and tweens entertained the audience with a lively Konkani medley. The much-awaited ‘Ye Re Ye Re’ performance became a highlight of the evening.
The colourful Vojem/Voryeath procession, accompanied by Harry’s Band, recreated the traditional Roce ceremony on the Austin stage, drawing enthusiastic applause from the audience. The celebration also featured talent displays, a Kahoot quiz, spot prizes, gifts, music and entertainment.
The MKCT executive committee comprising Jennifer Mascarenhas, Leo D’Souza, Ophilia Lima and Sanchia Sequeira worked alongside the wider community to organise the event.
Monthi Fest 2026 in Austin was a celebration of faith, family and Mangalurean heritage, demonstrating how traditions can flourish far from their place of origin. The community hopes the annual celebration will continue to grow, strengthening faith, bringing families together and inspiring younger generations to cherish their Konkani Catholic and Mangalurean roots.
