New York, Sep 17: Two people were stabbed during an altercation at SUNY Westchester Community College in Valhalla, New York, on September 16, police said.

Westchester County Police responded to the college after receiving multiple calls about a stabbing at around 12:40 p.m. Two suspects were taken into custody and a knife was recovered from the scene, according to police.

Police said there was no continuing threat to the campus community and that no other suspects were being sought. The incident reportedly began with a dispute that turned physical.

The two injured victims were taken to Westchester Medical Center, with one suffering serious injuries, police said. The two suspects were also taken to a different hospital for injuries sustained during the fight. Neither of the suspects had been stabbed, according to the police department.

A Westchester County Police spokesperson told the Journal News that all four people involved in the incident knew each other.

“It’s just shocking,” Leonardo Rivera, a 21-year-old student who witnessed the incident, told the Journal News.

Following the stabbing, the college’s Student Center was temporarily closed but was later reopened. The institution said all other buildings and operations continued as normal.

“Our top priority is ensuring a safe and welcoming campus environment for students, faculty, and staff,” SUNY Westchester Community College’s Office of the President said in a statement.

Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the altercation.
