Mumbai, Sep 17: Playback singer Sonu Nigam has clarified that a video circulating online showing him apparently reacting to Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s singing has been digitally edited and fabricated.

Nigam took to Instagram on Thursday to share the edited video along with a clarification. He explained that the original footage showed him reacting to the singing of a young Pakistani girl, but it had been wrongly stitched with a clip of Salman Khan’s song ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’.

“Can expect the unexpected on internet. I stumbled upon this edited video. This was my reaction for a Pakistani little girl singer,” Nigam wrote in his post.

Sonu Nigam and Salman Khan have shared a long professional association dating back to the 1990s. Their collaborations include ‘Jaane Kya Hua Hai’, which was picturised on Salman Khan and sung by Nigam.

The two have also been linked to reports of a professional fallout in the mid-2010s, around the period when ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’ was released. The song was part of a trend in which Bollywood actors began lending their own voices to film songs.

Nigam has previously expressed nuanced views on actors taking up singing in Bollywood. While acknowledging and respecting actors who explore music, he has also stressed that playback singing is a specialised art that requires years of training, practice and dedication.

His comments have focused on the importance of recognising the skills and expertise involved in professional playback singing, rather than dismissing actors who choose to sing.
