Minneapolis, Sep 3: Three people, including the suspected shooter, were killed and at least six others injured in a shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Police responded to a report of a shooting at an apartment building on East Grant Street around 4:36 pm. As officers arrived, multiple 911 calls reporting further gunfire led authorities to declare an active shooter situation.

Officers entered the high-rise building and encountered victims before following the sound of gunfire to an upper floor. Their visibility was reportedly limited by a haze inside the building, though authorities had not immediately determined its cause.

The suspected shooter exchanged gunfire with responding officers and later died. Police have not released the suspect’s identity but said they were familiar with the individual.

Five people suffered gunshot wounds, including two Minneapolis police officers. Another officer sustained non-gunshot injuries. All three officers were reported to be in stable condition, with their injuries not considered life-threatening.

Four people with apparent gunshot wounds were taken to hospital, where one later died, while another victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey praised the officers for helping evacuate residents and transport victims to safety despite coming under fire.

Authorities initially urged people to avoid the area around Loring Park, but later confirmed that the scene was secure and there was no further threat to the public.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the FBI were also responding to the scene and assisting local authorities. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed concern for the victims and thanked the first responders.
