Panaji, Sep 3: A police sub-inspector posted at Porvorim Police Station has landed in departmental trouble following allegations of misbehaviour with restaurant staff during a dispute over a food bill.
PSI Viraj Sawant is facing an inquiry after a restaurant owner alleged that the officer misbehaved with staff and threatened him during an argument over the price of a cheese garlic naan costing Rs 170. The incident was reportedly captured on CCTV and later circulated widely.
According to reports, Sawant had visited a restaurant in Porvorim with a friend when an argument allegedly broke out over the price of the cheese garlic naan. When restaurant staff attempted to explain the price, Sawant and his companion allegedly abused them and threatened the owner with police action.
Another purported CCTV recording, reportedly from a different occasion, allegedly shows the two men returning to the restaurant. Sawant is purportedly heard abusing and threatening the owner and using foul language in the presence of children.
The PSI also allegedly warned the restaurant owner that police action could be initiated if the establishment remained open beyond 11 pm.
The incident later reached the Goa Legislative Assembly, where Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao raised the matter and termed the alleged conduct of the police officer as shocking.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant informed the House that an inquiry had been initiated and said the PSI would be suspended if found guilty.
The Goa Police has attached Viraj Sawant to the General Reserve Police (GRP) at Altinho pending further departmental action. The restaurant owner has submitted a written complaint, while Sawant’s friend has also been questioned.
Police are currently preparing the inquiry report. No FIR has been registered in connection with the incident so far.
The Goa Police has stated that misconduct, corruption and violations of service discipline will not be tolerated and that any disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with due process.
