Mangaluru, Aug 31: Congress leader Prathibha Kulai has challenged the organisers of the proposed ‘Puttur Chalo’ programme, alleging that a young woman was denied justice after becoming pregnant by the son of a BJP leader in Puttur.
Speaking at a press conference at the Mangaluru Press Club on Monday, Kulai said the organisers had no moral right to invite her to the programme while failing to support the woman concerned.
“If they have the courage, they should get the young woman, who became a mother after becoming pregnant by the son of a BJP leader in Puttur, married to the youth,” she challenged.
According to Kulai, the young woman and her family had approached several BJP leaders in Puttur seeking support after allegedly being cheated by Krishna J Rao, son of a BJP leader. However, she alleged that none of the leaders came forward to support the family at the time.
She accused BJP leaders of now bringing up the issue for political purposes and attempting to create communal tension.
“I will stand with any woman in Dakshina Kannada who faces injustice. If the protesters come to Jagannivas after the Puttur Chalo programme, I will support their protest. Until this case is resolved, nobody has the right to speak about me,” she said.
Kulai also raised an issue concerning the name board displayed at the official residence of the Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner. She said she had earlier shared the matter on social media, questioning the display of the deputy commissioner’s wife's name on the government residence.
She maintained that only the name of the officer to whom the government residence has been allotted can be displayed on the premises and alleged that there was no authority to put up the name of a person who was not entitled to the official residence.
Kulai said she had expected the deputy commissioner, being aware of the law, to correct the alleged mistake. However, she accused the officer of showing an ‘arrogant attitude.’
She said she would wait for a week and, if necessary, take steps under the law to have the board removed. She added that she had already sent an email regarding the matter to the chief secretary of the state government.
