Karwar, Aug 31: Transformers and Rectifiers (India) Limited (TARIL) has secured an order to supply generator transformers for Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited’s (NPCIL) Kaiga Units 5 and 6 nuclear power project in Karnataka, marking the company’s entry into the nuclear power sector.

The order has been received from Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) and involves the supply of generator transformers and related works for the project. The order has been classified as a large order, with reports putting its value in the range of Rs 100 crore to Rs 500 crore, with execution scheduled over 35 months.

Kaiga Units 5 and 6 comprise two indigenous 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) being developed by NPCIL near Karwar in Karnataka. Together, the two units will add 1,400 MW of nuclear generation capacity at the Kaiga site. The project forms part of India's first fleet of ten indigenous 700 MWe PHWRs.

The generator transformers will be a critical component of the electrical infrastructure of the nuclear project. They will facilitate the evacuation of electricity generated by the reactors and its integration with the wider transmission network.

The Kaiga Units 5 and 6 project formally entered the construction phase on March 1, 2026, when NPCIL carried out the First Pour of Concrete after obtaining the required statutory and regulatory clearances. The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board had approved the First Pour of Concrete following safety reviews of the two 700 MWe indigenous PHWR units.

NPCIL said the project is being implemented through a strategy involving a limited number of major engineering, procurement and construction packages, including nuclear island and turbine island packages, with the aim of speeding up execution and reducing interface-related issues. The first unit is expected to achieve criticality about 60 months after the First Pour of Concrete.

The project is also part of India's broader Nuclear Energy Mission, which seeks to significantly expand the country's nuclear generation capacity. The government has set a target of reaching 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047, with indigenous 700 MWe PHWRs forming an important part of the expansion programme.

For TARIL, the order represents a strategic expansion into the specialised nuclear power equipment market. The company said its entry into the sector would strengthen its position in critical and high-value power infrastructure and allow it to contribute to India's growing nuclear and transmission infrastructure.

TARIL managing director and CEO Satyen Mamtora said strengthening indigenous capabilities and developing a resilient and self-reliant energy ecosystem would be important as India works towards its Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

The company said it plans to support India's expanding nuclear power ecosystem and transmission infrastructure through its high-voltage transformer manufacturing capabilities.

The announcement also lifted TARIL shares in Monday's trading session. The stock rose as much as 7.74% to Rs 326.95 on the NSE following news of the order.
