L&T bags mega Middle East order for 6 GWh battery storage projects

Mumbai, Aug 25: Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) on Tuesday said its renewable energy business has secured a mega order from a prominent Middle East client to develop three battery energy storage system (BESS) projects.

L&T classifies orders valued between Rs 5,000 crore and Rs 10,000 crore as mega orders.

The three projects will collectively provide 6 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of storage capacity, marking a significant step in grid modernisation and renewable energy integration in the Middle East, the company said.

The projects further strengthen L&T's position as a key engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) player in the rapidly expanding energy storage sector.

Besides the storage facilities, the scope includes grid interconnections, including pooling substations and underground cables, L&T said in a regulatory filing with the stock exchanges.

The infrastructure will enable energy shifting, allowing surplus clean power generated during off-peak periods to be stored and dispatched during peak demand hours.

Each project will feature a four-hour BESS capable of storing and supplying electricity to support grid stability and renewable energy integration. The advanced systems will use liquid-cooling technology designed to provide higher power density, improved safety and longer operational life.

L&T said the projects involve stringent requirements related to plant performance, workforce mobilisation, safety, quality and execution timelines.

"Such projects entail stringent requirements with respect to plant performance, workforce mobilisation, safety, quality and timeline. The order stands as a testament to the enduring trust and confidence that clients place in L&T, backed by proven engineering excellence and project management expertise," the company said.

Separately, L&T has also signed an ultra-mega contract worth more than Rs 15,000 crore to build gas compression facilities and associated infrastructure for a major Middle East client.

The scope of the gas project includes gas inlet facilities, compression systems, condensate and produced-water handling systems, and propane refrigeration systems for processing sour gas.
