Guwahati, Aug 24: Assam Police seized around 2,098 kg of ganja, estimated to be worth Rs 11-12 crore, during a major anti-narcotics operation in Kokrajhar district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday.

Taking to X, Sarma praised Kokrajhar Police for the seizure, saying the contraband was recovered at the Damrapara Checking Point.

According to the Chief Minister, the ganja had been concealed beneath bamboo in an attempt to evade detection during transportation. Two persons allegedly involved in transporting the contraband were also apprehended.

Sharing details of the operation, Sarma wrote, “Raat gayi, baat nahi jaane di,” while appreciating Kokrajhar Police for the action.

He estimated the value of the seized ganja at around Rs 11-12 crore, underlining the scale of the consignment and the significance of the recovery.

The seizure comes as the Assam government continues its crackdown on the trafficking and transportation of narcotic substances through the state.

Assam shares international and inter-state borders and has emerged as an important transit route for the movement of various types of contraband. Authorities have stepped up checking and surveillance at vulnerable points to prevent the transportation of narcotics.

The operation at the Damrapara Checking Point also highlights the role of police checkpoints in intercepting consignments being transported through the state.

Investigators are expected to probe the source of the seized contraband, its intended destination and the wider network allegedly involved in its transportation.

The two apprehended accused are likely to be questioned to establish their links with other persons allegedly involved in the drug trafficking network.

Sarma congratulated Kokrajhar Police for the operation and urged the Assam Police to continue their campaign against narcotics trafficking.

“Keep up the good work, Assam Police,” the Chief Minister said in his post.

The Assam government has in recent years maintained a strong focus on its anti-drug campaign, with police regularly conducting narcotics seizures and arresting alleged traffickers across the state.

Monday’s recovery is among the major narcotics seizures reported from Assam and is expected to provide investigators with leads into the movement of large consignments through the state.

The investigation into the case is underway.
