Mangaluru, Aug 15: St Aloysius Pre-University College celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day, with a programme that combined patriotic fervour with reflection on democracy, responsible citizenship and the meaning of freedom. The celebration was graced by S M Adyanthaya, retired group captain, Indian Air Force, as the chief guest.
The programme commenced with the ceremonial entrance of the chief guest and dignitaries, accompanied by the resounding beats of the marching band. The National Flag was then hoisted, creating a solemn and patriotic atmosphere as the gathering stood in respectful silence and paid tribute to the nation.
In his welcome address, Fr Clifford Sequeira SJ, principal, invited the gathering to look beyond conventional notions of independence. “Are we free?”, prompted reflection on the responsibilities that accompany freedom. He emphasised that true freedom is not merely freedom from restrictions but “freedom for something”-the freedom to serve, care for others, stand for justice and challenge prejudices. He also called upon students to celebrate diversity while recognising their shared humanity.
Esther Grace Fernandes, a student, reminded the gathering that the freedom secured through the sacrifices of the nation’s heroes carries a responsibility towards society. She urged the younger generation to uphold constitutional values, promote harmony and contribute towards building an India that is “stronger, kinder and more united.” She stressed that patriotism must be expressed through responsible action and meaningful contribution to the nation.
Dr Gladwin Fernandes, lecturer in Economics, highlighted the relationship between education and responsibility. Dr Gladwin stressed that education must produce not merely knowledgeable individuals but responsible citizens capable of applying knowledge with wisdom and ethical judgement. She also drew attention to environmental responsibility and the need for the responsible use of technology in an increasingly digital world.
Addressing the gathering, chief guest S M Adyanthaya reflected on the importance of remembering the struggles and sacrifices that shaped India’s history. He reminded students that their family background does not determine their future; rather, their character, choices and perseverance shape the lives they build. Describing patriotism as “doing the right thing every day,” he emphasised that the strength of a nation depends not only on its government but also on the millions of citizens who contribute to its progress through their everyday actions.
The celebration also recognised student achievements through a prize distribution ceremony, honouring students who had distinguished themselves in various competitions organised as part of the Independence Day celebrations. The programme also featured a patriotic medley by the College Choir, followed by a vibrant dance presentation by the students.
Fr Anthony Derrick, campus minister; Murali Krishna GM, vice-principal; deans Kiran Shetty, and Inas Dias, vice-president of the PTA executive committee; Dr Sheshappa Amin K; and the student council leaders- president AshithSudesh and secretary SkandaNavada were present at the programme.
The Independence Day celebration at St Aloysius Pre-University College went beyond a conventional commemoration, offering the gathering an opportunity for reflection on the meaning and responsibilities of freedom. The speeches, musical performances and cultural presentations conveyed a common message: the true measure of independence lies not only in the freedom inherited from the past but also in how responsibly, courageously and compassionately it is exercised in the present.
