Trump says Iran conflict may end soon, rules out nuclear weapons for Tehran

Washington, Aug 7: US President Donald Trump on Thursday said the ongoing conflict with Iran is likely to end "pretty soon", asserting that Tehran would not be able to sustain the war much longer while reiterating that the United States would not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said he expected the conflict to conclude soon based on the current situation.

"I think the war's got to end pretty soon. I don't think they can go much longer," he said.

The US President warned that allowing Iran to possess nuclear weapons would have catastrophic consequences, saying such a scenario would pose a serious threat to global security.

Trump also expressed optimism over negotiations concerning the Strait of Hormuz, while highlighting the role of the US Navy in maintaining security in the strategically important waterway.

He said the strait was currently "sort of open" due to the naval blockade, but cautioned that the threat of mines or attacks on commercial vessels remained a concern.

His remarks came amid media reports claiming that the US military was facing shortages of munitions and that Trump had sought an explanation from Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

According to a report by The Washington Post, Trump had questioned Hegseth over the alleged shortage, believing the issue had already been resolved.

However, Trump dismissed the report as false, accusing the newspaper of spreading misinformation. In a post on Truth Social, he described the report as "completely false" and praised Hegseth for his leadership.

The President said he was "extremely happy" with Hegseth's performance and described him as a highly respected leader within the US military.
