Mapusa, Jul 29: The much-awaited Porvorim elevated corridor has entered the final stages of completion with the project moving into the crucial load testing phase, raising hopes that the stretch will be opened for public use before Ganesh Chaturthi.

PWD Principal Chief Engineer Sandip Chodnekar said the load testing process is among the final and most important stages before the elevated corridor is declared structurally fit and commissioned.

“Load testing is an essential process carried out to assess the structural performance and stability of the bridge under simulated traffic loads. It is one of the major milestones in the completion of the project, and we are on track to commission the corridor on the eve of Chaturthi,” Chodnekar said.

The 5.15-km elevated corridor has completed most of its civil works, with only the final asphalt wearing course remaining. Chodnekar said the department requires around eight to 15 days of dry weather to complete the final surfacing work.

PWD officials said the landing approaches at both ends of the corridor have been completed, while electricity poles have been installed along the entire stretch. Other finishing works, including road markings, safety installations and additional infrastructure works, are progressing simultaneously.

The load testing involves placing calibrated loads at specific points on the structure to examine its strength, stability and performance under stress. The test results will be assessed against approved design standards before the corridor receives final clearance for traffic movement.

The Porvorim elevated corridor is one of Goa’s major road infrastructure projects and is expected to provide relief from congestion on the busy NH-66 stretch.

Once operational, the elevated route is expected to reduce travel time for commuters travelling towards Panaji and North Goa, especially during peak tourist seasons and festive periods.
