Sivakasi, Jul 26: At least three people lost their lives and several others sustained injuries after a powerful explosion tore through an illegally operated firecracker godown near Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar district on Sunday, sparking a massive fire and a series of secondary blasts.
The incident occurred at Sengamalpatti village in Sivakasi taluk, where workers were reportedly manufacturing firecrackers inside an unauthorised storage and production facility.
The force of the explosion extensively damaged the building, while continuous cracker explosions sent thick clouds of black smoke into the air, causing panic among residents in nearby areas.
Teams from the Fire and Rescue Services and the local police rushed to the site and launched a large-scale firefighting and rescue operation. After several hours of efforts, firefighters succeeded in bringing the blaze under control before beginning a search of the debris for trapped victims.
Police initially confirmed two deaths. However, during the rescue operation, firefighters recovered another body from the rubble, raising the death toll to three.
The injured were immediately shifted to Sivakasi Government Hospital for treatment. Officials said some of the victims are in critical condition and are being closely monitored by medical teams.
Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the cause of the explosion.
Preliminary findings indicate that the godown was operating without the required licence and regulatory approvals. Investigators are examining whether illegal manufacturing, improper storage of explosive materials, or violations of mandatory safety norms triggered the blast.
The tragedy comes just days after Tamil Nadu Industries Minister S. Keerthana held a meeting with fireworks manufacturers and traders in Sivakasi to discuss measures to improve the industry's competitiveness while strengthening safety standards and regulatory compliance.
Sivakasi, regarded as India's largest firecracker manufacturing hub, has witnessed numerous fatal accidents over the years involving both licensed and unlicensed units.
Previous investigations into similar incidents have repeatedly pointed to overcrowded workspaces, illegal storage of explosives, unauthorised manufacturing activities and non-compliance with prescribed safety protocols as major causes of such disasters.
Despite repeated directives and stringent safety guidelines issued by the Madras High Court for the fireworks industry, accidents continue to occur, renewing concerns over enforcement of regulations and adherence to safety standards across the sector.
