Washington, Jul 19: Republican Senator Josh Hawley has called on veteran lawmaker Mitch McConnell to provide greater clarity about his prolonged absence from the Senate, saying elected representatives have a responsibility to keep their constituents informed about their ability to serve.

In an interview with Fox News Digital published on Saturday, the Missouri senator extended his best wishes to the former Senate majority leader and his family but said that after an extended absence, public officials owe voters an explanation.

"At a certain point, you do have an obligation to your constituents and the country to tell them what's going on," Hawley said.

McConnell, 84, has been away from Congress for more than a month following health complications. The Kentucky Republican, who has represented the state in the Senate since 1984, is serving his seventh term.

The veteran senator broke his public silence on July 12, confirming that he had been hospitalised after suffering a fall that briefly left him unconscious. He also revealed that he developed a mild case of pneumonia during his hospital stay and has since been transferred to a rehabilitation centre.

McConnell's statement included a photograph of him in the hospital alongside his wife, Elaine Chao, and came after growing public speculation and widespread discussion over his health and continued absence from Capitol Hill.

Hawley also highlighted the practical impact of McConnell's absence, noting that Republicans hold only a 53-47 majority in the Senate, making every vote important as the party seeks to advance its legislative agenda.
