Bengaluru, Jul 17: Swiggy Instamart has partnered with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) to introduce India's first on-demand LPG cylinder delivery through a quick-commerce platform, with the service initially launched as a pilot project in Bengaluru.
The initiative expands the scope of quick commerce beyond groceries and daily essentials by enabling customers to order portable LPG cylinders for doorstep delivery. Based on customer response, the service is expected to be rolled out to other cities across the country.
Welcoming the initiative, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the move would make clean cooking fuel more accessible while promoting a digitally enabled energy ecosystem.
"The introduction of India's first on-demand LPG cylinder delivery through a quick-commerce platform, complemented by digital booking through HP Pay, is a significant step towards building a modern, customer-centric and digitally enabled energy ecosystem," Puri said in a post on X.
During the initial phase, customers can order HPCL's portable 5 kg and 10 kg LPG cylinders. The commonly used 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder is not part of the service at present.
The smaller cylinders are designed for portability and are expected to benefit students, tenants, small families, food vendors and those requiring LPG for outdoor or emergency use.
Customers do not need an existing HP Gas connection to avail of the service, allowing first-time users to purchase the smaller cylinders through the platform.
To place an order, users need to open the Swiggy app, access the Instamart section, select the LPG cylinder category, choose either a 5 kg or 10 kg cylinder, confirm the delivery address and complete the payment. Delivery will be carried out through HPCL's authorised distribution network.
The service is expected to be particularly useful for people living in rented accommodation, bachelors, students, owners of small cafés and food stalls, as well as those seeking a portable cooking fuel option.
HPCL and Swiggy have not yet announced the pricing of the cylinders, delivery charges, expected delivery timelines or the schedule for expanding the service to other cities.
