Junagadh, Jul 11: Four members of a family lost their lives and four others were injured after the car they were travelling in collided with a stationary truck near Majevadi village in Gujarat's Junagadh district on Saturday. Two of the injured remain in critical condition, while a child travelling in the vehicle escaped unharmed.

According to officials, the victims were residents of Tharad taluka in Banaskantha district and were on their way to the Somnath temple to immerse the ashes of a deceased family member. The accident occurred on the newly built four-lane bypass near Majevadi when their Ertiga car reportedly crashed into the rear of a truck parked on the road.

The collision was so forceful that the front section of the vehicle was completely wrecked. Four occupants died on the spot, while the remaining passengers suffered injuries of varying severity.

Police teams and personnel from the 108 Emergency Service rushed to the scene after receiving information about the accident. Rescue operations were carried out, and the injured were provided first aid before being shifted to Junagadh Civil Hospital for treatment.

Hospital authorities confirmed that two of the injured are in critical condition. The bodies of those killed were recovered from the mangled vehicle and sent to the civil hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident to establish the exact cause of the crash. Authorities are also examining why the truck had been left stationary on the highway at the time of the accident.

The tragedy has left the victims' families grieving, with relatives being informed soon after the incident. Meanwhile, officials continue to monitor the condition of the injured and pursue the investigation.

Road accidents remain a serious concern across Gujarat. Official figures indicate that the state witnessed 79,054 road accidents between 2021 and 2025, claiming 38,530 lives. While the highest number of fatalities was recorded in 2022, the greatest number of accidents occurred in 2025, when 56,100 road crashes were reported.
