Surathkal police crack two chain-snatching cases; arrest habitual offender, recover gold

Mangaluru, Jun 29: The Surathkal police have successfully cracked two separate cases of chain-snatching reported within their jurisdiction, arresting the accused and recovering the stolen gold ornaments intact.

The arrested accused has been identified as Mohammed Abdul Jafar (28), a resident of 2nd Block, Katipalla in Surathkal. He was apprehended on Monday, June 29, near State Bank in the city along with the stolen valuables.

Detailing the first incident, police stated that on June 26, around 2 am, an unidentified person reached through a window and snatched a gold karimani chain from the neck of a woman, Jahid, while she was sleeping in her bedroom at 2nd Block, Chokkabettu Azad Nagar. The chain snapped during the struggle, and the thief managed to flee with a piece worth approximately Rs 20,000, leaving the rest behind. A case was registered at the Surathkal police station in this regard.

In the second incident reported on June 27, between 5 am and 5:15 am, a thief targeted a house at 8th Block in Chokkabettu. After the house owner, Fayaz, left for the mosque for morning prayers leaving the front door closed, an intruder opened the door, entered the bedroom, and snatched a gold chain from his sleeping wife, Afrina. The chain broke, and the thief escaped with gold worth Rs 1,00,000, leaving behind a small piece and a pendant. Another case was filed at the Surathkal police station.

Following a swift investigation into both incidents, the police tracked down the accused and recovered the stolen jewellery.

According to the police, Jafar is a habitual offender with a criminal record. He already faces charges in a 2025 case at the Surathkal police station and a 2018 case at the Urwa police station for various offences, including assault and criminal intimidation.
