New Delhi, Jun 3: At least 21 people lost their lives and several others sustained injuries after a massive fire broke out at a restaurant in South Delhi's Malviya Nagar area on Wednesday morning.

The blaze engulfed the multi-storeyed Lemon Green Restaurant located in the Hauz Rani area, triggering a large-scale rescue operation. Officials said many of those who died were foreign nationals, though their identities are yet to be officially confirmed.

According to the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), a distress call was received at around 9.45 am, following which multiple firefighting and rescue teams were rushed to the spot. Officials said the fire is believed to have started around 8.50 am.

Firefighters rescued 37 people trapped inside the basement of the building and shifted them to nearby hospitals in CATS ambulances. Earlier, Delhi Police said 11 injured persons were evacuated and admitted for treatment.

A total of 10 fire tenders were deployed to contain the blaze. Divisional Officer Ravinder of the Nehru Place fire station supervised the rescue and firefighting operations.

The fire was later brought under control, but search operations continued for several hours as authorities inspected the premises to ensure no one remained trapped inside.

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Fire department officials and police personnel are conducting a detailed investigation into the incident.

Following the tragedy, the Prime Minister's Office expressed condolences to the families of the victims and announced financial assistance from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh will be provided to the next of kin of each deceased, while those injured in the incident will receive Rs 50,000 as assistance.

Authorities said all necessary support is being extended to the affected families as the investigation into one of the deadliest fire incidents in the national capital in recent years continues.
