Surat, May 28: A shocking incident has come to light from Gujarat’s Surat city where the partially burnt body of a newborn baby was discovered near Bhimnagar in the Udhna industrial area, triggering outrage and panic among local residents.

According to police sources, the remains are believed to be that of a baby aged around six to seven days. The body was spotted by local residents early on Thursday morning, following which large crowds gathered at the scene.

Police personnel from the Udhna Police Station immediately rushed to the spot and began an investigation.

Police Inspector RM Thakor stated that the newborn’s body had allegedly been dumped in a garbage heap by an unidentified person. Investigators suspect that the heap was later set on fire or may have accidentally caught fire, resulting in severe burns to the body.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the infant may have already been dead before the fire broke out. However, officials said the exact cause and circumstances of death would be confirmed only after the postmortem examination.

The remains have been sent for medical examination to ascertain the baby’s exact age, gender and cause of death.

Meanwhile, police have intensified efforts to identify those responsible for abandoning the newborn. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being scanned, while inquiries are also being conducted at nearby hospitals, clinics and gynaecologists.

Authorities are further attempting to trace suspicious persons and vehicles reportedly seen in the locality during the late-night and early morning hours.
