Editor Shweta Venkat questions FWICE over ‘selective outrage’ in Ranveer Singh controversy

Mumbai, May 27: Film editor Shweta Venkat has criticised the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) over what she termed as “selective outrage” following the federation’s recent non-cooperation directive against actor Ranveer Singh over his alleged abrupt exit from Farhan Akhtar’s upcoming film Don 3.

Shweta, known for her work in films such as Gangs of Wasseypur, Newton, Haseen Dillruba and Kalank, questioned why the federation acted swiftly in Ranveer Singh’s case while long-pending concerns raised by film editors allegedly remained unresolved.

Speaking to SCREEN, Shweta revealed that in 2023, around 242 film editors had collectively approached FWICE regarding issues such as delayed payments, wage structures and difficult working conditions.

According to her, the editors had requested a formal dialogue with producers and submitted a letter signed by industry professionals detailing their concerns. However, she claimed that there had been little communication or meaningful follow-up after the initial discussions.

“We needed a dialogue with the producers. There was also a letter sent to them, signed by 242 editors working in the industry, outlining the issues. But there has been no communication or revert post that meeting,” Shweta said.

The editor also took to social media to express her frustration, questioning the federation’s quick response in the matter involving Ranveer Singh.

Referring to the FWICE directive against the actor, she described the action as “cute” and asked why similar urgency had not been shown in addressing the issues faced by editors over the past three years.

“When film editors had come to you for help setting up a dialogue with producers, where was this efficiency? It has been three years. Or maybe we weren’t cool enough,” she wrote.

Shweta further remarked, “Basically producer ya actor bano,” implying that only influential figures in the industry receive prompt attention.

FWICE had recently issued a non-cooperation directive against Ranveer Singh following reports surrounding his alleged exit from Don 3, directed by Farhan Akhtar and produced by Excel Entertainment.
