Idaho, May 18: A major aviation scare unfolded in the United States after two fighter jets collided mid-air during an air show at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho, prompting an immediate lockdown and cancellation of the remaining events.

The incident occurred during the Gunfighter Skies Air Show shortly after 12:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, when two military aircraft—identified as EA-18G Growler jets—reportedly collided while performing aerial manoeuvres. The impact sent the aircraft crashing nearly two miles outside the air base, with thick black smoke rising from the crash site.

Eyewitness videos circulating on social media captured the moment of collision, followed by the separation of the aircraft and the deployment of parachutes. Four parachutes were later seen descending, indicating that all crew members successfully ejected before impact.

Officials confirmed that all four personnel aboard the jets survived the incident. According to reports from the Idaho Statesman, an announcer at the event informed spectators that the crew had safely escaped prior to the crash. The United States Navy later confirmed the successful ejection of all crew members involved.

Following the accident, authorities placed the air base under lockdown as emergency and security teams responded to the crash site. All remaining air show activities scheduled for the day were immediately cancelled as a precaution.

The Gunfighter Skies Air Show had recently returned after an eight-year hiatus and had attracted large crowds, featuring military aircraft demonstrations, aerobatic performances, and displays by US armed forces personnel. Organisers had reportedly spent years preparing for the event, with extensive safety and emergency response arrangements in place.

The cause of the mid-air collision has not yet been determined, and a formal investigation is underway to establish what led to the accident during the aerial demonstration.
