Health and sustainability take centre stage with Nitte University’s CupWise initiative

Mangaluru, May 15: Nitte University’s CupWise initiative was inaugurated at the Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital, Deralakatte, Mangaluru, on May 14. This initiative aims to motivate faculty and students to bring their own reusable cups during break time for tea and coffee, thereby promoting sustainability and healthier lifestyle practices.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr Jayaprakash Shetty B, senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital, Mangaluru.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dr Suma Ballal, deputy registrar and chief coordinator, SDG Cell, Nitte University, highlighted the harmful effects of microplastic leaching from disposable paper cups when hot liquids are poured into them. Emphasizing the health benefits of using reusable cups, she encouraged everyone to adopt this simple yet impactful habit.

The event was attended by Dr Sukanya Shetty, vice dean, KSHEMA, Shashi Kumar Shetty, chief NSS coordinator, Nitte University, Dr Vinayaka Shet, secretary, SDG Cell, Dr Prerana Hegde and Dr Priya Alva, general coordinators, along with faculty members and students from the various institutes of the main campus.

The program concluded with all participants taking a pledge to become changemakers for a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment.
