Guwahati, May 12: Himanta Biswa Sarma will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam for a third consecutive term on Tuesday, as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) forms the government again after a sweeping victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.
The grand swearing-in ceremony will be held at the Khanapara Veterinary College Field in Guwahati in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, and over 40 chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from NDA-ruled states.

The NDA secured a massive mandate in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly by winning 102 seats. The BJP emerged as the single-largest party with 82 seats, while alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) won 10 seats each.
Four ministers representing key NDA allies and senior BJP leaders will take oath alongside Sarma.
AGP president Atul Bora, elected from Bokakhat constituency, is set to join the Cabinet again. A senior regional leader, Bora has handled important portfolios such as Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Urban Development, and Town and Country Planning in previous governments led by Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Senior BJP leader Ajanta Neog will continue as a prominent face in the Cabinet. Elected from Golaghat, she previously served as Assam’s Finance Minister and became the first woman to hold the portfolio in the state. Neog, a former Congress leader, has represented the constituency continuously since 2001.
Rameswar Teli, a prominent leader from the tea garden workers’ community, will also be inducted into the Cabinet. The Duliajan MLA earlier served as Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Labour and Employment, and Food Processing Industries. He had also represented Duliajan in the Assembly from 2001 to 2011.
Charan Boro of the Bodoland People’s Front will take oath as Cabinet minister representing the NDA ally. The Majbat MLA had served as Transport Minister and also handled Welfare of Bodoland in the previous government.
Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass is likely to become the new Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly. Dass, elected from Bhawanipur-Sorbhog constituency, had earlier served as Speaker between 2016 and 2017 and was BJP Assam state president from 2016 to 2021.
