Udupi, May 4: A late-night motorcycle accident reportedly escalated into a violent clash, with allegations of assault and gold chain snatching. A case and counter-case have been registered at the Udupi Town police station.

According to one complaint, on May 2, S Vaibhav B Nayak of Badagabettu was at home with friends Shashwath Shetty, Abhay Samuel, Yashas, and Aditya Bhat. After dinner, around midnight, Abhay and Shashwath left on a motorcycle. Near Babbuswami Temple, a dog allegedly crossed the road, causing the bike to skid and both riders to fall.

Abhay then contacted Vaibhav, claiming that locals had gathered and were assaulting them. Vaibhav, along with two others, reached the spot by car. A confrontation reportedly followed, during which members of the gathered group allegedly abused and assaulted them. One person, identified as Shekhar, is accused of slapping Vaibhav. The complaint states that several people then attacked the group and used a wooden stick, causing injuries. During the incident, a gold chain weighing about 40 grams worn by Vaibhav was allegedly snatched.

In a counter-complaint, Shekhar alleged that he was sitting near his house when two youth on a motorcycle fell nearby. When he tried to help them, they allegedly questioned and assaulted him. He further claimed that the riders called others to the scene, who arrived in a car, abused him, trespassed into his property, and attacked him with a wooden stick, injuring him. He also alleged that he was threatened before the group fled.

Police said investigations are ongoing into both complaints.
