Sundar C cites ‘overwhelming pressure’ for exit from Rajinikanth’s film

Chennai, May 3: Actor-director Sundar C has broken his silence on stepping away from Rajinikanth’s much-anticipated 173rd film, backed by Kamal Haasan, stating that “overwhelming pressure” and evolving creative differences led to his decision.

The project was initially announced in October last year by Raaj Kamal Films International, with Sundar C set to direct the superstar. However, in November, Kamal Haasan confirmed his exit, after which filmmaker Ciby Chakravarthy was brought on board.

In an interview, Sundar C revealed that Rajinikanth was keen on doing a “proper family entertainer” reminiscent of his popular films from the 1990s. Despite locking in a concept, the director admitted he felt unable to carry the project forward.

“Honestly, the pressure was overwhelming. For the last 16 years, I’ve been making films based on my instincts and what I believe works for the audience,” he said.

Reflecting on their past collaboration in Arunachalam, Sundar C noted that their creative alignment has changed over time. “Back then, we discussed every scene and dialogue in detail. But after nearly 30 years, our sensibilities and screen images have evolved, and things don’t align the same way anymore,” he explained.

He further said that a big-budget film demanded a unified vision. “It can’t be just my voice. I realised I wouldn’t be able to stay true to the film or the people involved. I also struggle to communicate my vision clearly and tend to compromise instead of standing my ground,” he added.

Despite stepping away, Sundar C clarified that the decision does not rule out future collaborations. “Rajini sir told me we can work together whenever I’m ready. The idea I had is still alive, and I may explore it with another actor,” he said, adding that Kamal Haasan did not interfere creatively in the project.

While Ciby Chakravarthy was initially named as the replacement, industry buzz now suggests that the project may have moved to Ashwath Marimuthu due to creative differences. However, no official confirmation has been made, and the film, earlier expected to go on floors in April-May, is yet to begin production.

Meanwhile, Sundar C continues to stay busy with upcoming projects. He has completed Mookuthi Amman 2 starring Nayanthara, and is currently working on Purushan featuring Vishal, Tamannaah, and Yogi Babu.

In addition to his film career, Sundar C recently contested the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from the Madurai Central constituency representing Puthiya Needhi Katchi.
