Chennai, Apr 28: Sporadic cases of Measles are being reported across Chennai, particularly among children and adolescents, prompting doctors to emphasise timely vaccination and early diagnosis as the city heads into peak summer.
The Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine has clarified that there is no significant surge in cases compared to last year, with infections currently under control. Officials said the state’s immunisation coverage stands at 99 per cent.
Authorities reiterated that the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine, administered at nine and 18 months of age, provides around 85 per cent protection. However, they stressed the need for continued vigilance and strict adherence to vaccination schedules to prevent any potential rise in cases.

Doctors noted that measles cases tend to increase during the summer season. Dr Praveen Kumar, Consultant in General Medicine at SRM Prime Hospital, said incomplete vaccination remains a major concern.
“Children who are partially vaccinated are more vulnerable and can contract the infection when exposed,” he said, highlighting that completing the full immunisation schedule is crucial.
He added that the MMR vaccine is typically given at 15 months, followed by a booster between four and six years, and in some cases, another during adolescence for stronger immunity.
Medical experts explained that measles spreads through respiratory droplets, making it highly contagious. Infected children should be isolated at home to prevent transmission.
Common symptoms include fever followed by a rash, along with cough, runny nose, and red eyes. While most cases recover with supportive care, complications such as pneumonia and ear infections can occur and require timely treatment.
Dr Vigneshwari Raja, Consultant Paediatrics at Apollo Cradle Karapakkam, said that while cases are currently limited, the situation needs close monitoring as summer progresses.
Doctors advised parents to ensure children receive all scheduled vaccine doses, avoid contact with infected individuals, watch for early symptoms, and seek medical attention promptly. Adequate rest, hydration, nutrition, and continued care during recovery are also essential to ensure complete healing.
