Mumbai, Apr 22: Abhishek Bachchan has opened up about his love story with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, sharing how their relationship evolved over the years as the couple celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary.
In a recent interview, Abhishek recalled first meeting Aishwarya in 2000 on the sets of Dhai Akshar Prem Ke, directed by Raj Kanwar. He said their bond was initially friendly, with no indication of a future relationship.
“There was no inkling back then of what was to come. We got along very well. But did I suspect she was my soulmate? No!” he said.

The two later worked together in Kuch Naa Kaho, but their relationship remained professional. It was during the filming of Umrao Jaan, directed by J P Dutta, that their bond began to change.
Abhishek described this phase as the moment when a “spark” developed, which grew stronger during the making of Guru, directed by Mani Ratnam.
He revealed that he proposed to Aishwarya in New York at the premiere of Guru, on a balcony where he had once imagined a future with her. The couple soon had their roka ceremony and got married in April 2007 in an intimate wedding.
Reflecting on their journey, Abhishek said Aishwarya remains central to his life. “Today, Ash is not just the mother of my daughter but also my soulmate. Nineteen years of our marriage has been a dream,” he said, crediting her for raising their daughter Aaradhya with strong values.
He also hinted at special plans for their upcoming 20th anniversary, though he chose not to reveal details.
On maintaining a successful marriage amid constant public scrutiny, Abhishek added humorously, “Every night, before you sleep, say ‘Sorry’ three times to your wife.”
Interestingly, he had proposed using the same ring featured in Guru, which held emotional significance. In an earlier interview, Aishwarya had described the gesture as spontaneous and meaningful, reflecting the authenticity of their relationship.
The couple continues to be one of Bollywood’s most celebrated pairs, admired for their enduring bond over nearly two decades.
