Mangaluru, Apr 21: The district unit of the D. Devaraj Urs Backward Classes Development Corporation organised a distribution programme under the ‘sewing machine distribution scheme’ for the year 2024–25, benefiting women from economically weaker sections.

A total of 20 women from backward class families were provided with sewing machines at a programme held on Tuesday morning at the taluk panchayat hall. The beneficiaries were selected during a committee meeting chaired by Mangaluru North MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty.

Addressing the gathering, the MLA emphasised that government welfare schemes must reach genuinely deserving beneficiaries. He noted that such initiatives play a crucial role in enabling women to become self-reliant and build sustainable livelihoods.

Taluk panchayat planning officer Sukanya, assistant accounts officer Parameshwara, assistant development officer Jayashree, and other officials of the corporation were present.
