Trump signals tough stance on Iran amid ongoing diplomatic talks and Gulf tensions

Washington, Apr 19: U.S. President Donald Trump has said that Iran “cannot blackmail” the United States, even as diplomatic engagements between Washington and Tehran continue, reflecting a dual approach of pressure alongside negotiation.

Speaking at the White House, Trump said the U.S. remains in communication with Iran but will not soften its position. He described the ongoing discussions as “working out very well” while emphasizing that Washington is maintaining a firm and uncompromising stance.

He also accused Iran of long-standing hostile actions over the past several decades, saying it had “gotten away with murder for 47 years,” and warned that such actions would no longer be tolerated. Trump added that updates on the situation could emerge soon, though he did not provide further details.

His remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region, particularly around the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route for oil transport. Trump claimed Iran had again attempted to disrupt maritime traffic in the area, stating that such actions would not succeed.

He also suggested that shifts in shipping routes are already taking place, with more vessels reportedly moving through alternative ports in the United States, including Texas and Louisiana.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints, and any disruption there is closely watched due to its potential impact on global oil prices and supply chains.

In his remarks, Trump also defended past U.S. military decisions against Iran, referencing the 2020 strike that killed Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani. He linked Soleimani to attacks on U.S. forces and accused Iran of being responsible for American casualties through indirect warfare tactics.

The comments underscore continuing volatility in U.S.–Iran relations, where diplomatic engagement and military deterrence continue to operate in parallel amid regional uncertainty.
