Sexual misconduct allegations rock Eric Swalwell’s gubernatorial bid

California, Apr 12: Senior staff of California gubernatorial candidate Eric Swalwell have condemned allegations of sexual misconduct against him as “abhorrent,” hours after the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office confirmed it is investigating a sexual assault complaint by a former staff member.

The controversy follows media reports alleging sexual misconduct involving multiple women. A former employee accused Swalwell of sexual assault, while other reports cited additional allegations from three women, including one claim of a forced sexual encounter in a New York hotel room in April 2024.

Swalwell has strongly denied all allegations, calling them “false” and suggesting they are politically motivated. In a video statement, he acknowledged past “lapses in judgment” but insisted that no misconduct occurred.

In a joint statement, his senior campaign and congressional staff said they were “horrified” by the allegations and expressed support for the women who have come forward. They also clarified that staff members continuing in their roles should not be seen as endorsing Swalwell.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has urged anyone with information related to the case to contact its Special Victims Division, assuring a survivor-focused approach.

The allegations have triggered significant political fallout. Several Democratic leaders have withdrawn their support, including Adam Schiff and Ruben Gallego. Campaign leaders Jimmy Gomez and Adam Gray have stepped down from their roles.

An external group backing his campaign has also suspended operations amid the controversy.

Meanwhile, Anna Paulina Luna has said she plans to introduce a motion to expel Swalwell from Congress when the House reconvenes.

Despite mounting pressure, Swalwell has given no indication that he will withdraw from the gubernatorial race or resign from his congressional position.
