Hyderabad, Apr 11: A 24-year-old woman, who was allegedly injected with HIV-positive blood by a man after she refused to marry him, has died by suicide in Hyderabad, police said.

According to police, the incident took place on March 11 when the accused Manohar allegedly forcibly injected infected blood into the woman at her residence after she called off their marriage. The accused, who is also a relative of the victim, had earlier tested positive for HIV after being screened by the woman’s family, following which she had cancelled the wedding proposal.

Soon after the alleged attack, Manohar was arrested.

Police said the woman had been under severe mental stress following the incident and was struggling with fear, stigma, and emotional trauma. On Friday, she was found hanging at her home. She was rushed to a government hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Investigators said they suspect psychological distress linked to the alleged assault may have led to the suicide, while all aspects of the case are being verified.
