US serial killings case: Accused Rex Heuermann likely to plead guilty in Long Island Murders

New York, Apr 8: In a significant development in a long-pending serial killings case, Rex Heuermann, the man accused of murdering seven women and dumping their remains along Long Island’s Gilgo Beach, is expected to plead guilty during a court hearing on Wednesday.

Heuermann (62), an architect based in Massapequa, has been in custody since July 2023. He had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges involving seven murders, including four victims whose remains were discovered in 2010 along Gilgo Beach.

According to sources familiar with the case, Heuermann is now likely to “take responsibility” for all seven killings. Reports indicate that no plea deal has been struck with the prosecutors. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The trial was earlier scheduled for September.

The case dates back nearly three decades, beginning with the 1993 killing of Sandra Costilla. It gained widespread attention following the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert in 2010, which led to the discovery of multiple human remains along Ocean Parkway.

The victims include Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack, and Sandra Costilla — many of whom were young women working as escorts.

Investigators made a breakthrough in 2022 after forming a multi-agency task force. Using DNA evidence, cellphone records, and witness accounts, authorities were able to link Heuermann to the crimes. He was arrested in July 2023, with additional charges added over time.

For the families of the victims, a guilty plea is expected to bring long-awaited closure after years of uncertainty and delayed justice.

Meanwhile, legal proceedings are set to continue as the court prepares to formally record the plea and deliver sentencing in one of the most disturbing serial crime cases in recent US history.
