Odisha, Apr 4: In a tragic and unusual incident, a man lost his life after a live fish got stuck in his throat while fishing in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Abinash Bijuli, a resident of Dighi village under Bangriposi police limits.

According to sources, Abinash had gone fishing in a village pond in the morning when he caught a ‘Kau’ (Indian Koi) fish. In an attempt to prevent the fish from slipping away, he reportedly placed the live fish in his mouth. However, the situation turned fatal when the fish suddenly wriggled deeper into his throat and became lodged in his airway.

He began choking and struggled to breathe. Though he was rushed for medical assistance, he could not be revived and died due to suffocation.

Family members alleged negligence at the hospital. “A ‘Kau’ fish accidentally got stuck in my nephew’s throat while he was fishing at Digibandha today. We immediately rushed him to Bangriposi Medical. The doctor behaved roughly with us and threatened to refer him without providing treatment,” the victim’s uncle claimed.

Further details are awaited as authorities look into the incident.
