Shaping young minds: India’s vision for holistic education under NEP 2020

New Delhi, Apr 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the transformative vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, describing it as a cornerstone for nurturing curiosity, creativity, and all-round development among students. He encouraged citizens to explore an in-depth article by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, which elaborates on the policy’s impact and direction.

The Prime Minister reflected on the deeper meaning of a child’s first day at school—not merely as a personal milestone, but as a shared national responsibility. Under NEP 2020, India aims to create an environment where learning is rooted in joy, with strong emphasis on foundational literacy and early intellectual engagement.

NEP 2020 represents a broad and forward-looking reform designed to make education more inclusive, equitable, and aligned with modern global demands. In his article published in The Indian Express, Minister Pradhan explains that the policy shifts focus away from rote memorisation and instead prioritises understanding, inquiry, and holistic growth.

He vividly describes the emotional and symbolic nature of a child’s first school experience—filled with curiosity, excitement, and uncertainty—and stresses that early education should revolve around play, exploration, and discovery. Integrating pre-school learning into formal schooling ensures that children begin Grade I with essential foundational skills already in place.

At the core of this vision is a strong national commitment to foundational literacy and numeracy. Education, as outlined in the policy, is not limited to academics but must support the development of the “whole child,” including physical health, creativity, and emotional well-being. Activities such as arts, sports, nutrition, and physical exercise are treated as integral components of learning.

The responsibility of education extends beyond institutions. It is a collaborative effort involving governments, teachers, parents, and communities. Through initiatives like the NIPUN Bharat Mission, the goal is clear: every child should be able to read with comprehension and perform basic arithmetic by the end of Grade II. The emphasis is on conceptual understanding and encouraging students to ask questions, rather than simply memorising answers.

The policy also addresses broader health concerns among children by promoting physical education and awareness initiatives like “oil boards” and “sugar boards,” alongside strengthening nutrition programs such as PM-POSHAN.

While technology is recognised as a powerful learning tool, concerns about excessive screen time and mental health are also acknowledged. To address this, socio-emotional learning has been incorporated into the curriculum to support students’ overall well-being.

Teachers play a pivotal role in bringing these reforms to life, especially in promoting multilingual education and valuing mother tongues. At the same time, learning is seen as extending beyond the classroom. Homes are recognised as the first learning spaces, where parents shape habits related to reading, nutrition, sleep, and engagement with education.

Ultimately, the vision of NEP 2020 is to build an education system that is inclusive, innovative, and future-ready—one that instils confidence, compassion, and curiosity in every child, preparing them to contribute meaningfully to the vision of a developed India by 2047.
