Trump signals willingness to end Iran conflict despite Strait closure

Washington, Mar 31: US President Donald Trump is reportedly open to ending the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran even if the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

Citing administration officials, the report said Trump and his aides concluded that attempting to forcibly reopen the key global energy route could extend the conflict beyond their targeted four-to-six-week timeline. Instead, the US is focusing on core military objectives, including weakening Iran’s naval capabilities and missile stockpiles, while simultaneously pursuing diplomatic efforts to restore maritime trade through the strait.

If diplomatic pressure fails, the US may urge European and Gulf allies to take the lead in reopening the crucial shipping corridor. Officials indicated that while military options remain available, they are not currently the administration’s immediate priority.

However, Trump’s public statements have at times struck a more aggressive tone. On Monday, he warned that the US could “completely obliterate” Iran’s key infrastructure—including electric plants, oil facilities, and Kharg Island—if a resolution is not reached swiftly.

At the same time, Washington has moved to bolster its military presence in the region. The deployment includes the USS Tripoli and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, along with elements of the 82nd Airborne Division. Reports suggest that sending up to 10,000 additional ground troops is also under consideration.

Trump is also said to be evaluating a potential operation targeting Iran’s uranium reserves, highlighting the complexity of the evolving strategy.

White House Press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that efforts are ongoing to restore normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, though reopening the waterway is not currently listed among the administration’s primary military objectives.
