Neem compound shows promise in fight against pancreatic cancer, say researchers

New Delhi, Mar 29: A new study has indicated that Neem, widely known for its medicinal properties in traditional practices, may hold potential in combating Pancreatic Cancer, one of the deadliest forms of cancer.

Researchers have identified a natural compound called gedunin in neem, which could target pancreatic cancer cells while potentially causing fewer side effects compared to conventional treatments. The findings, however, are based on early-stage laboratory and pre-clinical studies.

The study focused on how gedunin interacts with cancer cells, particularly examining its impact on the Sonic Hedgehog signalling pathway, a crucial mechanism that drives tumour growth, spread, and resistance to treatment.

According to researchers, gedunin may help slow cancer progression by disrupting key signalling pathways, limiting the spread of tumour cells, and promoting apoptosis—a natural process that causes harmful cells to self-destruct. It may also offer a lower toxicity profile compared to traditional chemotherapy, though this remains to be validated through further studies.

Pancreatic cancer continues to pose a major challenge globally due to its rapid progression, late diagnosis, and resistance to existing therapies. This has prompted scientists to explore alternative approaches, including plant-based compounds that could complement or enhance current treatments.

While the findings have generated interest, experts caution that neem cannot yet be considered a cure. Extensive clinical trials in humans are required before any therapeutic application can be confirmed.

The study nonetheless opens new avenues in cancer research, highlighting the potential of natural compounds in developing future treatment strategies.
