RG Kar victim’s mother hints at BJP entry, may contest from Panihati

Kolkata, Mar 20: In a significant political development, the mother of the deceased doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital—widely referred to as “Abhaya”—has indicated that she may enter electoral politics as a candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Sources suggest that her name could feature in the party’s second list of candidates for the Panihati Assembly constituency, expected to be released later in the day.

The brutal killing of the young doctor had sparked nationwide outrage and prolonged protests. For over a year and a half, her parents have been demanding justice, with the case becoming a symbol of concerns over women’s safety and institutional accountability.

In a phone interview with ABP Ananda, Abhaya’s mother said her decision to enter politics is driven primarily by concerns over women’s security in West Bengal.

“I want to be a candidate mainly because of women's safety. No girl, no woman is safe in West Bengal,” she said, alleging widespread corruption under the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government.

She added that although she had earlier received offers from the BJP, she was not mentally prepared at the time. Now, she has expressed readiness to take her fight to a larger platform.

Abhaya’s mother asserted that systemic change is necessary to address issues in the state’s healthcare and education sectors.

“I joined the BJP to uproot the entire Trinamool regime. I felt that the BJP was the only option to get justice for my daughter’s death,” she said, expressing hope that a change in government could help deliver justice.

She also highlighted that her daughter had been raising concerns about corruption in the healthcare system, which she intends to make a central theme of her campaign.

Meanwhile, Abhaya’s father voiced disappointment over the protests that followed the incident, alleging that many participants were driven by personal or political motives rather than genuine concern.

“Those who protested did not do it for my daughter’s justice. They did it for their own sake,” he said, adding that the public remains unaware of the family’s ongoing struggle and the actual progress of the case.

The development marks a shift from activism to active politics for the bereaved family, with wider political implications ahead of the upcoming elections.
