Chennai, Mar 17: Election Commission of India (ECI) has deployed 327 Central Observers in Tamil Nadu to oversee the ongoing Assembly election process, making it one of the largest observer deployments in the country.

The extensive monitoring team includes 136 General Observers, 40 Police Observers, and 151 Expenditure Observers, covering all 234 Assembly constituencies across the state.

Officials said the unusually high number of Expenditure Observers reflects the Commission’s increased focus on tracking campaign spending and preventing the misuse of money power to influence voters.

The deployment forms part of a nationwide exercise involving 1,111 observers assigned to monitor elections in different states. However, the scale and electoral sensitivity of Tamil Nadu prompted the Commission to ensure stronger oversight.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar reiterated that the Commission remains committed to ensuring that every voter can cast their vote freely and without fear, coercion, or inducement.

Observers act as the Commission’s direct representatives on the ground and are responsible for safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.

All observers have been instructed to reach their assigned constituencies by March 18. After arrival, they will publish their contact details and hold daily interactions with candidates, political parties, and citizens to address complaints and monitor possible violations.

The deployment has been carried out under the constitutional mandate of Article 324 of the Constitution of India along with provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

Election officials said the large-scale presence will help ensure strict monitoring of law and order, campaign expenditure, and adherence to the Model Code of Conduct, with the goal of conducting peaceful, transparent, and credible elections in the state.
