Bengaluru, Mar 10: Mercedes-Benz has introduced the all-electric Mercedes-Benz CLA sedan with a strong focus on technology, design and long driving range, targeting younger luxury car buyers rather than the traditional chauffeur-driven segment.
The new CLA 250+ variant stands out with an impressive claimed range of up to 792 km on a single charge, one of the highest in its segment. The range is made possible by its aerodynamic coupe-like styling, an 85 kWh NMC battery pack and a unique two-speed gearbox designed to improve efficiency.
Unlike most electric vehicles that use a single-speed transmission, the CLA features a two-speed setup to optimise power delivery and efficiency. During a brief test drive, the vehicle delivered a real-world range of around 620–650 km, indicating strong efficiency though a longer range test would be required for precise evaluation.
The CLA 250+ is powered by a single electric motor producing 272 bhp. The power delivery is smooth and progressive rather than aggressively quick, offering a relaxed and refined driving experience. The compact dimensions also make it easy to manoeuvre in urban environments, while the light steering aids parking and city driving.
Drivers can also choose from various regenerative braking modes through the gear selector stalk, allowing near one-pedal driving where the car slows significantly once the accelerator is released.
Compared to the earlier CLA models, the latest version offers improved ride comfort and better ground clearance, making it more suitable for Indian road conditions. The suspension absorbs most road imperfections, though sharp bumps may slightly unsettle the ride.
The exterior styling remains a highlight, featuring the signature Mercedes grille embedded with 142 star elements along with sleek coupe-inspired lines that enhance both aerodynamics and visual appeal.
Inside, the cabin features a youthful design with premium materials and a large 14-inch touchscreen controlling most functions. The car also integrates advanced technology including artificial intelligence features and ChatGPT integration. The system allows interactive voice commands and even supports gaming while the vehicle is charging.
Built on an 800-volt architecture, the CLA supports ultra-fast charging, though such charging infrastructure is still limited in many locations.
The luxury features list includes Burmester premium audio, massage seats and augmented reality navigation. The full glass roof includes a heat-protection layer designed to keep the cabin cool even in hot conditions.
While front seat space is comfortable, the rear seats feel slightly tight due to the low roofline, smaller windows and a higher seating position. As a result, the CLA is better suited as a driver-focused sedan rather than a chauffeur-driven vehicle.
In terms of practicality, the car offers good storage space including a front trunk (frunk) and a 405-litre rear boot.
Overall, the CLA EV presents itself as a stylish luxury sedan with strong range capability and cutting-edge technology, making it an attractive option for first-time luxury car buyers.
