Patna, Mar 2: In a major crackdown ahead of Holi, police in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district seized a large consignment of illegal foreign liquor and arrested a pickup truck driver during a special operation in the Gaighat police station area on Monday.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, police received information that a substantial quantity of liquor was being transported from Darbhanga to Muzaffarpur for unlawful distribution during the festive season. Gaighat Police Station in-charge Raja Singh alerted senior officers and initiated a targeted operation.

A checkpoint was set up near Jarang Chowk on the Darbhanga–Muzaffarpur main road under Gaighat police limits. During vehicle checks, a suspicious pickup truck was intercepted and searched, leading to the recovery of nearly 744 litres of foreign liquor. The driver was taken into custody on the spot.

Confirming the seizure, Muzaffarpur Senior Superintendent of Police Kantesh Kumar Mishra said the ???????? was based on credible intelligence and that further investigation is underway. The arrested driver is being interrogated to determine the origin of the consignment and its intended recipients.

Officials said intensified action against illegal liquor trade will continue, particularly during festivals, when attempts to smuggle alcohol tend to rise. The latest seizure has reportedly unsettled operators involved in illicit liquor distribution in the region.

In a related development on February 28, Patna Police recovered nearly 480 litres of foreign liquor during a raid in Ghasiyari Gali under the Khajekalan police station limits. Acting on a tip-off, officers conducted a swift operation and seized the consignment.

According to Sub-divisional Police Officer (Sadar Range) Gaurav Kumar, preliminary investigations have pointed to an alleged interstate smuggling network, with consignments reportedly sourced from neighbouring states such as West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. Further inquiries are ongoing.
