Kolkata rattled by 5.5 magnitude quake tremors felt across city

Kolkata, Feb 27: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale jolted Kolkata and adjoining areas on Friday afternoon, triggering panic among residents who rushed out of their homes and offices.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the tremor struck at 1.22 pm IST at a depth of 10 km. The epicentre was located in Bangladesh at latitude 22.57°N and longitude 89.11°E.

The US Geological Survey (USGS), however, recorded the quake at a magnitude of 5.3 and said the epicentre was about 26 km southeast of Taki in West Bengal.

Strong tremors were felt across several parts of Kolkata and nearby districts, particularly those close to the India-Bangladesh border. Visuals shared on social media showed people gathering in open spaces as buildings swayed briefly.

Many residents took to X to describe their experience. “Felt the tremors of an earthquake for the first time in my life,” wrote one user, while another posted, “Terrible waves felt at Kolkata.”

Authorities are yet to confirm any reports of damage or casualties. Further details are awaited.
