Giridih, Feb 19: A Class 8 student of Delhi Public School (DPS) in Jharkhand allegedly suffered a ruptured eardrum and 30 per cent hearing loss after being slapped by his Physical Training (PT) teacher for growing his hair on February 14.

The incident occurred at DPS located in Harsingrai Dih under the Mufassil police station limits in Giridih district.

Following the incident, the victim’s father, Dilip Kumar, a resident of Koyritola under Pachamba police station, lodged a written complaint at the Mufassil police station. Considering the seriousness of the allegation, police registered an FIR and initiated an investigation.

According to the FIR, the boy was told before the morning prayer that his hair was long, though his father claimed it was short. The complaint alleged that at the instance of Principal Soni Tiwari, PT teacher Ali Raja suddenly slapped the student hard on the ear from behind.

The slap reportedly caused severe bruising to the boy’s right ear.

The father said his son informed him about the incident after returning home from school and complained of difficulty in hearing and pain in the ear. “I took my son to Sadar Hospital and then to Mercy Hospital. After examination, the doctor found that his right eardrum was ruptured, resulting in 30 per cent hearing loss,” he stated.

Dilip Kumar further alleged that when he informed school chairman Baljit Singh Saluja about the matter, the chairman threatened to expel his child from the school.

Calling the incident traumatic for his son, the father accused PT teacher Ali Raja, Principal Soni Tiwari and Chairman Baljit Singh Saluja of wrongdoing and demanded strict action.

Confirming the development, Shyam Kishore Mahato, officer-in-charge of Mufassil Police Station, said an FIR has been registered based on the complaint.

“A complaint was received regarding the assault of a child studying in a school in Harsingrai Dih. Based on the application submitted by the victim’s father, Dilip Kumar, an FIR has been registered against teacher Ali Raja, Principal Soni Tiwari and Chairman Baljit Singh Saluja. Further investigation is underway,” he said.

Meanwhile, PT teacher Ali Raja described the incident as minor. “It was not a major issue. The child remained in school for five hours after the assembly and did not complain of any pain. We do not come to school to beat children; we come here to educate them,” he said.
