Dehradun, Feb 11: A 40-year-old businessman was shot dead by unidentified assailants in the crowded Tibetan Market area of Dehradun on Wednesday afternoon, sparking panic among traders and shoppers in the vicinity.
The victim, Arjun Sharma, operated Amardeep Gas Agency on GMS Road. According to police, Sharma had arrived in the market area when armed attackers allegedly opened fire on him before fleeing the scene.
He was rushed to Doon Hospital immediately after the incident, but doctors declared him brought dead.

Inspector General (Garhwal Range) Rajeev Swaroop confirmed the killing, stating that senior police officials, including the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dehradun, visited the spot soon after the incident. “Arjun Sharma was fired upon by assailants and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital,” he said.
Police have sealed off the area and launched a search operation to trace those responsible. Forensic experts examined the crime scene, and CCTV footage from nearby shops and establishments is being scanned for leads.
A man identified as Vijay, who had reportedly worked with Sharma for several years, alleged that the deceased was involved in a property transaction valued at approximately Rs 40–42 crore with an individual named Vijay Uniyal. He claimed Sharma had received threats in connection with the deal. Police said they are investigating all possible angles, including the alleged property dispute. The case falls under the jurisdiction of Vasant Vihar Police Station.
Assuring strict action, IG Swaroop said the matter would be examined comprehensively. He stated that accountability would be fixed if any negligence on the part of police personnel is found. “We will review the entire sequence of events carefully. If there has been any lapse, appropriate action will be taken. Policing measures will be further strengthened to prevent such incidents,” he said.
The IG added that while the city had largely remained peaceful in 2025, there had been a marginal rise in such incidents over the past two to three weeks. He emphasised that responsibility would be determined at the jurisdictional level, including that of the concerned Station House Officer and area officer, if required.
Further investigation is in progress.
