New Delhi, Feb 9: A serious breach of prison security came to light in Haryana’s Faridabad district jail after a 20-year-old undertrial accused in a terror case was killed in an overnight attack by another inmate, officials confirmed on Monday.

The deceased, identified as Abdul Rahman, was allegedly assaulted with a sharp weapon inside the jail late Sunday night. Police said he suffered fatal head injuries during the attack.

Confirming the incident, police spokesperson Yashpal Singh said the assault was carried out by a fellow prisoner, Arun Chaudhary, a Kashmiri youth lodged in the same facility. “The attack took place during the night when the accused inmate struck Abdul Rahman on the head with a sharp object. He was critically injured and later succumbed,” Singh said.

Abdul Rahman, a resident of Milkipur in Uttar Pradesh, had been arrested on March 2, 2025, near Pali village. At the time of his arrest, security agencies recovered two hand grenades from his possession. Investigators had alleged that he was part of a plot to carry out a terror attack in Ayodhya. Officials also claimed that several videos recovered from him contained sensitive material linked to the Ram Temple.

The arrest was the result of a joint operation conducted by the Gujarat Special Task Force and the Haryana STF. Authorities had then stated that the grenades were safely defused, averting a possible major incident. Rahman was subsequently sent to Faridabad jail as investigations into the wider terror network continued.

Following Sunday night’s attack, jail officials immediately alerted senior authorities. Rahman was taken for medical treatment but was declared dead by doctors. In the aftermath, prison security has been significantly tightened, and senior officers visited the jail to review the situation.

Police have registered a murder case and taken the accused inmate, Arun Chaudhary, into custody for questioning. Investigators are looking into the motive behind the killing and are also examining whether any security lapses within the jail contributed to the incident.

Officials said a comprehensive inquiry is underway and assured that strict action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
