GOP support for Trump shows signs of erosion, survey finds

Washington, Feb 1: Republican faith in President Donald Trump is showing cracks, according to a new Pew Research Center survey, as his approval rating dips and frustration grows within his own base.

The poll, released on Jan. 29, indicates Trump’s overall approval stands at 37%, down three points since last fall. Support for his economic policies has also fallen, with only 27% of U.S. adults endorsing his proposals, compared to 35% when he returned to the White House last year. A two-to-one majority believes his administration’s actions have made conditions worse.

The decline is most notable among Republicans themselves. In 2025, about 67% of GOP voters backed “all or most” of Trump’s ideas. That figure has now dropped to 56%, signaling emerging discontent within his core supporters.

Over the past two months, Trump has campaigned across the country, promoting his economic record and executive actions, such as the Jan. 20 order restricting Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes. Despite these moves, the Pew survey shows support among Republicans at 73%, a notable decline from September.

The survey also highlights a shift in GOP attitudes toward party loyalty in Congress. Only 38% of Republican and GOP-leaning independents now feel lawmakers “have an obligation to support” Trump’s ideas, while 61% assert that congressional Republicans need not follow the president if they disagree, up from 55% last year. Analysts suggest this could reflect a growing willingness among conservative legislators to distance themselves from Trump on contentious issues, including immigration enforcement and the handling of high-profile legal files.
